The day of African Child.
Lets take a moment to honor and celebrate the Day of the African Child which is celebrated each year on the 16th June. For this year celebration, we celebrate milestones made by an African day of the African child, let us take a moment to reflect on the fundamental right of every child to safety, dignity, and opportunity, especially in times of crisis. While food and shelter are rightly prioritized in emergencies, we believe education must be treated with the same urgency. As one of our core pillars education is not just about learning, it is a life saving intervention. For children from unstable home environment, schools provide stability, protection from exploitation, and hope for a future beyond survival.
This year’s theme for International Day of the African Child is Planning and budgeting for children’s rights: Child-Friendly Budgeting began in the late 1990s, inspired by the UNCRC and driven by early adopters like South Africa and Uganda. Although, there has been progress there is still room for improvement to give every child an opportunity to have a descent education. This is something that we all have to do our part to make this possible for every child. Despite the progress made towards child-friendly budgeting, education remains underfunded, particularly in emergencies.
In the 21st century, access to free, inclusive, and quality education should never be negotiable. When we invest in education, we invest in breaking cycles of poverty and conflict, empowering children to rebuild their communities.
